ACDIS update: Double check CCDS exam rules before your test!

CDI Strategies - Volume 16, Issue 4

Only those working in the CDI field for at least two years are eligible to sit for the certified clinical documentation specialist (CCDS) credential. The exam aims to measure not only the candidates’ experience level but also their level of expertise. The ACDIS community—the volunteer members of the Advisory Board and the Certification Committee—intend the credential to be a point of pride for those who hold it, for the CCDS to be a significant accomplishment. It says to the world that CCDS holders have the capability of performing the role of the CDI specialist, the expertise to understand the importance of the role, as well as the dedication and determination to pursue this mark of excellence within the profession.

Those contemplating sitting for the exam should thoroughly read The Exam Candidate’s Handbook. The Handbook is the only source for all the logistical information candidates need to determine eligibility, application processes, day-of-the-exam expectations, study tips and exam parameters, and much more.

Note that while The CCDS Exam Study Guide is an amazing resource, complete with a sample online exam to help candidates prepare, it does not contain much of the logistical information found within the Handbook.

ACDIS encourages candidates to seek assistance from colleagues, and even to form study groups with fellow CDI professionals or ACDIS-affiliated chapters. Candidates should be wary of potential misinformation and double check the Handbook, Study Guide, and ACDIS website to confirm information obtained elsewhere.

The exam is an open book test, meaning the questions are not intended to “trick” the candidate. Candidates are allowed to bring certain textbooks into the exam with them including the MS-DRG book and a drug book. However, only books on the list of accepted texts are allowed so please refer to the Handbook (p. 7-8) for more information.

Similarly, be wary of any person or organization offering to share examination questions. The CCDS exam is a closely guarded, third-party managed, test to prove one’s capabilities. No one has access to all the exam questions and test takers shouldn’t be drawn in by false promises.

The CCDS credential is one which more than 5,000 CDI professionals’ hold. It is a badge of honor. We hope that all those seeking it, hold it in the same regard.
