Case study | Benefits of a CDI-specific credential
by Jess Fluegel
While certifications specific to CDI are by no means a requirement to get into the CDI field, they have grown to become a rite of passage for many CDI professionals. According to the 2023 CDI Week Industry Survey, 66.09% of respondents hold the Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) credential, 13.09% hold the Certified Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP) credential, and 4.57% hold the Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist-Outpatient (CCDS-O) credential. Among CDI professionals who serve in roles with more responsibilities, holding a CDI credential is even more popular. When demographics were taken into consideration, a significantly higher percentage of respondents in leadership-type roles (e.g., CDI team lead, CDI manager, CDI supervisor) held CDI-specific certifications than others (see chart).
