I bet I can speak for many of us who work in CDI and have had the experience of being a patient, as I did during my recent cardiac procedure—I knew the diagnosis that would be coded, the principal diagnosis, and the relative weight of the DRG I was in! I got off the cardiac catheterization lab table with this thought in mind, proud of the relative weight and the effect on the case-mix index at the institution where I worked. Thankfully, all these thoughts served as an anxiety-reducing diversion as I settled into a hospital bed for a 24-hour stay as an outpatient.
