Local chapter update: Plan for leadership transitions every three years

CDI Strategies - Volume 15, Issue 24

Volunteering as a local chapter leader is a rewarding process, allowing CDI professionals a chance to serve their local professional community, exercise and grow their leadership skills, and network and collaborate with other leaders and chapter members. Volunteering, however, is also work and leaders need to plan a succession plan to ensure they don’t get burnt out and the chapter continues actively without them at the helm.

Realistically, three years is the maximum that anyone should be volunteering in a local chapter leadership position. So, if you’ve been in the role for two years, it’s time to start considering your transition plan and mentoring new volunteers so they’re ready to take over effectively when it’s time for you to step back. Don’t wait till you’re already exhausted and ready to step back to search for a successor.

While you may have chapter members in mind who could easily and happily take over your role, ACDIS administration is also happy to help you identify the next generation of leaders. The online chapter membership roster, for example, asks respondents whether they’d be interested in volunteering. Reach out to ACDIS administration today to get your chapter roster and find tips for identifying new potential volunteers.
