Local chapter update: Time to give back

CDI Strategies - Volume 14, Issue 52

As we approach the holidays, now is the time to see what your local chapter can do to give back to the community around you. The Maryland ACDIS chapter makes a point to meet annually for a toy drive, and the following content was written by Maryland chapter leader Deb McClain. Consider what your chapter might be able to do to give back to your community this year.

“Several years ago, under Olga Firstbrook’s leadership, the Maryland ACDIS chapter began a tradition of a pot-luck, fun and fellowship lunch meeting at our annual December membership meeting. Our meeting also included a community service component through an annual Toys for Tots collection. Every member who attended the meeting and brought a new unwrapped toy to donate would receive a door prize ticket. Any leftover food appropriate to donate, would be brought to local homeless shelters. Everyone enjoyed it, and most everyone who donated graciously gave more than one toy.

“This year will be a little different. Our meeting location at the Maryland Hospital Association closed through the end of the year. This announcement also coincided with our annual Maryland ACDIS Conference. Traditionally for our conference we would donate a portion, or all of our registration fees, to the host hospital’s employee assistance fund. Because our conference was to be held virtually without a host hospital, our leadership team decided to donate 100% of the registration fees collected to Toys for Tots, an organization that is near and dear to our hearts.

“We collected more than $1,400 in donations with some of our amazing members donating more than the asking cost of registrations. Our chapter had a very successful first-time virtual platform conference and met our goal for our community’s welfare all in one event. We will miss our holiday festivities in December as it was always a great afternoon with a short business agenda and an abundance of fellowship, but we feel that we maintained our service minded goal by making a large donation to Toys for Tots this year. We were still able to give back to our community while learning a little CDI, too.”
