News: Government recovers $4 billion via healthcare fraud prevention/enforcement

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recovered nearly $4.1 billion in taxpayer dollars in Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 thanks to its increased healthcare fraud prevention and enforcement efforts, according to a recent release.
The government recovered roughly half that total through civil healthcare fraud cases brought under the False Claims Act. Of these, Medicare fraud by hospitals and other intuitional providers were joined by offenses such as unlawful pricing by pharmaceutical manufacturers, illegal marketing of medical devices and pharmaceutical products for uses not approved by the FDA, and violations of laws against self-referrals and kickbacks.
According to the release, it the highest annual amount ever recovered.
