News: January sees 106 ACOs begin operation

Across the country, 106 new Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) began operation this month, according to a CMS Blog post by Jonathan Blum, CMS Acting Principal Deputy Administrator and Director.
Since passage of the Affordable Care Act, more than 250 ACOs have been established in more than 47 states, according to a January 10 press release.
The release points to ACOs as a key driver in the reduction of healthcare spending, referring to a report from the Department of Health & Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation which shows Medicare spending per beneficiary “grew just 0.4% per capita in fiscal year 2012.”
ACOs must meet quality standards to ensure savings stem from improvements in care coordination. According to the release, federal savings from the initiative could be as high as $940 million over four years.
