News: Planned surgical readmission documentation may reduce expected readmission outcomes

Unplanned readmissions may by overestimated by as much as 25%, according to a study by physicians in the neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center presented at American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) meeting in Miami earlier this year.
The team studied data regarding spinal surgeries from 2007-2011 from the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), and found that readmissions did not distinguish between planned, scheduled, stated surgeries and those surgeries that were unplanned or related to complications, according to an article on the UCSF site.
If planned re-hospitalizations were appropriately captured it could affect reimbursement efforts, the study says.
