Note from the ACDIS Editor: CDI Journal focuses on education

CDI Strategies - Volume 12, Issue 39

By Linnea Archibald

It seems that summer just began and yet, looking outside, I can already see several trees changing colors. With the changing of the seasons, comes back-to-school mayhem for many. Just as the children return to classrooms, the newest edition of the CDI Journal invites CDI professionals to follow suit, sit up, and take notes.

There’s always something to learn in CDI—whether it’s your first or 10,000th day on the job. To help you make the educational leap in your chosen career, the Journal includes articles for all stages. If you’re brand new to the profession, learn from three CDI professionals who come from different backgrounds (a foreign-trained physician, a coding professional, and a nurse) and take a page from their journey.

Or, if you’re new and feeling discouraged, read what Allen Frady, RN, BSN, CCDS, CCS, CRC, has to say about the educational stages you’ll go through as you mature in CDI.

For those who are more advanced, there’s an article about continuing your education as you mature and one on how to keep your CCDS credential up-to-date from CCDS Coordinator Penny Richards.

Readers in CDI leadership positions can learn from Angela Maxfield, RN, CCDS, about how to orient new staff to the job, too, taking into account their previous professional experiences and expertise. And, read about how your staff’s emotional intelligence factors into the success of the department from Barbara Anderson, RN, MSM, CCDS.

This edition also holds many articles to help CDI professionals in their day-to-day work within its pages. For instance, CDI professionals know that the biggest stumbling block for success can be physician engagement, so in this edition’s Physician Advisor Corner, Erica Remer, MD, FACEP, CCDS, walks through three tips for educating physicians.

Additionally, readers will learn about documentation for pressure ulcers, why they should care about PSI 90, even though it’s currently suspended, what’s involved in starting an outpatient CDI program, and CMS’ changes to evaluation and management coding and documentation requirements.

The ACDIS team hopes you’ll enjoy this latest edition and find something of value inside. The November/December edition will focus on the shifting regulatory and coding environment, so if you have an article idea or a story you’d like to suggest or share, please feel free to email me.
