Note from the ACDIS Editor: A guide to program maturation
by Linnea Archibald
The whole world is living in a time of transition right now as the COVID-19 situation develops day-by-day. CDI teams have had to adapt to remote work, changing patient census numbers, taking on additional duties, and occasionally even taking furloughs. While these changes have happened at a breakneck pace, CDI programs go through evolutions even under normal circumstances.
For the May/June edition of the CDI Journal, we want to help you through those evolutionary stages—from program launch to advanced program levels. To help you navigate the edition and leverage it to its full extent, Associate Editor Carolyn Riel and I have marked each of our “feature length” articles in the table of contents with a “B” for “beginner,” an “I” for “intermediate,” and an “A” for “advanced.”
Within this edition’s pages, readers will learn about
- Forming CDI steering committees
- CDI work in the time of COVID-19
- Branching out into quality reviews
- Breaking down departmental silos
- Defining what makes an “advanced” CDI program
- Implementing CDI observation reviews
- Pediatric heart failure clinical nuances
Of course, this edition also includes some of our usual articles from our CDI Boot Camp instructors, a preview of the virtual ACDIS event from our associate editorial director, guidance from a physician’s perspective, and advice from an ACDIS member. This edition also includes an in-depth summary of the latest Coding Clinic release and an article by yours truly on leveraging the Journal for your own programmatic maturation.
The ACDIS team hopes you enjoy this latest edition and find some helpful information to advance your CDI practice within its pages. The July/August edition of the CDI Journal will focus on CDI and physician education, so if you’d like to contribute, wish to share your CDI journey, or suggest an article idea, please feel free to email me.
