Note from the Associate Editorial Director: A CDI Journal edition for Olympic-level learners
by Linnea Archibald
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question we often ask of young people who, more than likely, have very little concept for what “growing up” really means. It’s been a long time since someone asked me that question, but I think I’ve finally landed on the answer I’d give: I want to be someone who is always learning, always open to new information that can change the way I think and see the world.
Practically speaking, I accomplish this goal by way of the process writing, both professionally and personally. Writing is the activity I love most, but really, it’s a pathway to learning, to processing, to sharing knowledge.
I’m not a CDI professional, but I’ve found a kindred spirit in many people who are. Because they—you—love learning, too. In many cases, it’s part of what drew you to the profession in the first place.
Most every year, we dedicate an edition of the CDI Journal to the topic of education and it’s always one of my favorite editions. Our members and CDI friends never fail to impress me with their creativity and enthusiasm for learning and education. Just when we think we’ve heard it all, a source will say something totally new during the interview process or a contributing writer will share a fresh perspective about their educational journey.
The newest edition of the Journal holds many gems related to education and I think you’ll be delighted by the novel ideas and tactics it offers. To take the fun even further, we’ve also put an Olympic-themed spin on the edition (because of course we did). Just like an Olympic sport, continued learning takes work, but it can also be a joy.
Within this edition’s pages, you’ll read articles about:
- Team development strategies
- Higher education for CDI professionals
- The power dynamics of American healthcare
- Educational games to make learning fun
- Showing appreciation for your staff and physicians
- Weekend CDI coverage
- Educating and collaborating with other departments
- Educational efforts during the pandemic
This edition also includes articles about the 2022 ACDIS conference poster presentation from ACDIS Editor and Product Coordinator Karla Accorto and using pop culture to make education fun from Laurie L. Prescott, RN, MSN, CCDS, CDIP, CRC. We also included Outgoing ACDIS Director Brian Murphy’s farewell note to the ACDIS community and our usual Meet a Member feature.
The ACDIS team hopes you enjoy this latest edition and find some helpful advice for breathing new life into your educational efforts. The May/June edition of the CDI Journal will focus on diversity in CDI. If you’d like to contribute, wish to share your CDI journey, or suggest an article idea, please feel free to email us.
Here’s to being people who are perpetual learners!
