CDI Strategies - Volume 18, Issue 23

The majority of healthcare organizations have insufficient cybersecurity protocols in place, according to a new survey published in Software Advice. The survey yielded a number of concerning answers in an age where cyberattacks on healthcare facilities are becoming more and more prevalent.

There were 296 respondents in the survey (companies who outsourced IT management and cybersecurity were excluded). Here are some of the highlights of the survey:

  • 50% of respondents have experienced a data breach, with 32% having experienced one within the last three years.
  • 48% of the reported ransomware attacks impacted patient data, with 27% affecting the delivery of patient care.
  • 34% of healthcare organizations did not recover patient data following their ransomware attack.
  • Only 63% of healthcare organizations have a cybersecurity response plan in place.
  • In 2023, 74% of healthcare organizations spent fewer than five hours on IT security.
  • 55% of medical practices allow access to more data than employees need to do their job.
