News: CMMI has 192,000+ active provider participating in new models, report says
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) has submitted its 2024 Report to Congress, according to the American Hospital Association (AHA).
Established in 2010 as part of the Affordable Care Act, CMMI was “created for the purpose of testing ‘innovative payment and service delivery models to reduce program expenditures [...] while preserving or enhancing the quality of care’ provided to individuals who receive benefits from Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.”
In particular, the report examined model activity spanning from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2024, and announced the creation of nine new models. In addition, it highlighted a number of strategic accomplishments occurring over the past two years, under headings such as “Accountable Care,” “Advancing Health Equity,” “Supporting Innovation,” “Addressing Affordability,” “Partnering to Achieve Systemic Transformation,” among others.
For instance, under the headline “Accountable Care,” the report noted that the CMS Innovation Center grew its Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health program “from 53 ACOs and about 350,000 covered lives in 2021 to 132 ACOs and 2.1 million covered lives in 2023.”
Here are some other highlights of the report:
- During the period surveyed, CMMI estimates that approximately 57 million Americans have benefited from CMMI model programs
- During the period surveyed, there have been 37 active models and initiatives
- During the period surveyed, approximately 192,000 providers are anticipated to participate in the nine upcoming models
