Case management or HIM? Finding the right home for CDI

In a recent “CDI Talk” discussion, ACDIS members shared reporting structure details, describing the pros and cons of their situations. Of those participating in the discussion, three reported to quality, one reported to the chief financial officer, and one reported to thechief medical information officer (informationtechnology). Most discussion participants reported to either case management or HIM—five to six respectively.

Their anecdotal results were similar to those illustrated in the 2010 CDI Staffing Survey. In that study,33% reported to HIM/Coding, 23% reported to case management. Despite HIM generally taking the lead as the CDI program’s home base, many facilities struggle to determine which structure works best.
