News: 2027 CPT code set released, bringing new codes and revisions

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently announced the 2027 CPT code set includes 299 new codes, 74 revisions, and 80 deletions coming to a variety of services.

Beginning January 1, 2027, the code set will include updates to maternity care services, which the AMA released early to allow for a smoother transition of their implementation. Beyond those, updates include changes to the following services:

• Artificial intelligence (AI) services: Ten new codes will be added to AI-related services, bringing the total to 43. CPT Appendix S: Taxonomy for artificial intelligence in medical services & procedures has also been updated to help with determining appropriate terminology for CPT code descriptors.
• Hernia repair: Nine new codes to broaden the reporting of traumatic and non-traumatic open, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic diaphragmatic hernia repair procedures.
• Sleep medicine: Six new codes will be added to address unattended sleep studies. These additions will reflect advances in sleep-testing technology, such as those delivered outside traditional sleep centers.
• Ventricular assist device (VAD) procedures: Three new codes will be added involving left VADs. New and revised guidelines also address improved reporting of these procedures.
