News: 433 ICD-10-CM code changes took effect on October 1

CDI Strategies - Volume 17, Issue 45

On October 1, the second round of fiscal year (FY) 2024 ICD-10-CM coding changes took effect. CMS implemented the addition of 395 new diagnosis codes, 25 deletions to the diagnosis code set, and 13 revisions. Of the new diagnosis codes, 30 were related to social determinants of health (SDOH) for factors influencing health status and contact with health services, and 123 reside in the external causes of morbidity chapter of the ICD-10-CM manual including new codes to capture accidents and injuries, HealthLeaders reported.

The new code updates can be found by chapter:

  1. Chapter 3: 21 new codes will be added
  2. Chapter 6: 24 new codes will be added
  3. Chapter 7: 34 new codes will be added
  4. Chapter 13: 36 new codes will be added
  5. Chapter 17: 22 new codes will be added
  6. Chapter 18: 18 new codes will be added
  7. Chapter 20: 123 new codes will be added
  8. Chapter 21: 30 new codes will be added

There are also numerous new guidelines added for reporting SDOH codes, such as a “code also” note that instructs coders to report applicable risk factors for HIV. Another “code also” update says codes for the following diagnoses should also be reported as applicable:

  • Absence of a family member
  • Disappearance and death of family member
  • Disruption of family by separation and divorce
  • Other specified problems related to primary support group
  • Other stressful life events affecting family and household
