Known primarily as a medical transcription and documentation firm, Tennessee-based Spheris was nevertheless the nation’s second-largest provider of clinical documentation technology and services. Earlier this month, the company filed for bankruptcy, according to an article in the Nashville Business Journal.

In a release on the company’s Web site, Chief Operating Officer Tony James said, “Spheris is committed to maintaining the highest levels of customer satisfaction and we will remain focused on our operations throughout this process. We expect the transition to be seamless for our customers and we appreciate their continued support.”

Spheris plans to sell to its competitor MedQuist, but before that can happen, the court will hold an auction of Spheris’ assets, the Journal reported.
