News: CMS delays meaningful use rulemaking, stands firm on ICD-10 implementation date

CDI Strategies - Volume 7, Issue 6

Rulemaking regarding Stage 3 meaningful use of electronic health records will be delayed until 2014, according to an announcement by CMS Acting Administrator Marilyn Tavenner during the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in New Orleans last week.

However, the ICD-10 implementation deadline of Oct. 1, 2014 remains solid, she said.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) urged CMS to take such action in a January letter to the Health IT Policy Committee. In addition, CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology issued a notice seeking input on policy changes aimed at accelerating the adoption of electronic health information exchanges across providers.

“HHS is considering a number of policy levers using existing authorities and programs,” the notice states. Comments on the changes will be accepted through April 21.
