News: CMS finalizes ICD-10-PCS codes for 2018

CDI Strategies - Volume 11, Issue 30

On June 13, CMS released the final 2018 ICD-10-PCS codes that will become effective October 1, according to Just Coding. These changes come remarkably close to April’s 2018 IPPS proposed rule.

CMS introduced 3,562 new ICD-10-PCS codes, 1,821 revised titles, and deleted 646 codes. These changes amount to a total of 78,705 codes in the 2018 code set, while the 2017 code set contained only 75,789 codes.

The majority of the changes, CMS said, are to the medical and surgical section. CMS also highlights that in the medical and surgical section, many body part values have been revised or streamlined for clarity and data usefulness. CMS also notes that endoscopic approaches have been added to various tables throughout the system for completeness.

The root operation Bypass and Replacement code groups received many of the code additions; many of the deleted codes related to the codes under root operation Supplement.

The full list of added, revised, and deleted codes can be downloaded from CMS’ website.
