News: Comments on proposed new ICD-10 codes due Friday

CDI Strategies - Volume 11, Issue 15

The Coordination and Maintenance Committee met at the CMS headquarters on March 7-8 to discuss the proposed new ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for fiscal years (FY) 2018 and 2019. The commenting period for the proposed codes closes on Friday, April 7.

The code proposals relating to types of myocardial infarctions (MI) and heart failure will have especially wide affect, according to ICD-10 Monitor.

The new codes for types of MI would be solely based upon the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) categorization and have new codes assigned to each type. The new codes for heart failure stages would be based on the ACC and American Heart Association’s categorizations. The heart failure codes also include new subcategories offering greater specify for a patient’s severity of illness/risk of mortality (SOI/ROM) scores.
