News: Department of Justice and Office of the Inspector General announce 'record-breaking' returns

CDI Strategies - Volume 8, Issue 26

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recovered $5.69 billion in False Claims Act settlements in fiscal year (FY) 2014; $2.3 billion of which against federal healthcare programs, according to a press release.

In its semiannual report to Congress, the Office of Inspector General estimates its FY 2014 recoveries at $4.9 billion—with 80% of its work focused on Medicare and Medicaid related concerns. The report, released December 10, also states that OIG excluded 4,017 individuals and entities from federal health care programs in FY 2014 and reported 971 criminal actions.

CDI professionals need to watch OIG efforts and DOJ efforts as such targets frequently overlap with common CDI focus areas.
