Note from the Editorial Manager: Take advantage of our PSI resources!
by Karla Kozak
Created by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) offer healthcare organizations information on potentially avoidable safety events and opportunities for improving care delivery. However, between inclusion/exclusion criteria, numerator/denominator calculations, exclusion codes, and other nuances, PSIs can be difficult to fully grasp.
But, that’s where ACDIS can help!
The following resources related to PSIs and quality are available to all:
- ACDIS Podcast episodes
- Advisory Board series: Patient Safety Indicators with Tami McMasters-Gomez, MHL, BS, CCDS, CDIP, CCS-P, the director of coding and CDI programs at UC Davis Health in Sacramento, California, and Keisha Downes MBA-HM, BSN, RN, CCDS, CCS, the vice president middle revenue cycle for Beth Israel Lahey Health in Massachusetts
- Quality deep dive: PSI 15 (accidental punctures and lacerations) with LaKisha Richardson, CCDS, CCS, CRCR, CDI manager at Ensemble Health Partners
- Quality deep dive: PSIs and HACs with Kathy Dorich, MSN, RN, CCDS, CPHQ, director of Illinois CDI operations for Advocate Health and the recipient of the 2024 CDI Professional of the Year ACDIS Achievement Award
- Quality Map, which is maintained by the ACDIS Regulatory Committee and intended to assist organizations with their quality efforts
- ACDIS Council Report: CDI and Quality Improvement, which features ACDIS Leadership Council insights on the results of a nationwide survey exploring quality reviews and reporting
The following resources related to PSIs and quality are available exclusively for ACDIS members:
- Physician Advisor Tip Sheet: Patient Safety Indicators (PSI), which was written by the 2024–2025 ACDIS Physician Advisor Committee and offers documentation tips for physician advisors related to PSI 90
- November/December 2024 issue of CDI Journal, which featured several articles focused on quality and risk adjustment
Additionally, we’re also proud to offer detailed information on all 17 AHRQ PSIs as part of our ACDIS PRO online resource. Each PSI has its own page containing information on how to determine the numerator and denominator (including denominator exclusions), exclusion codes, relevant ICD-10-CM guidance, CDI-specific tips, clinical examples, as well as references.
Check out these resources and let us know if there’s any others you’d like to see!
