Q&A: Navigating the CMS website

CDI Strategies - Volume 13, Issue 8

Q: I’m looking at the hierarchical condition categories (HCC) information on the CMS website and am having trouble navigating it. How can I find the current year CMS-HCC list without the count variables model (drop list)? What about the current year ICD-10-CM and HCC mappings?

A: Go to the search box in the upper right corner of the site (www.cms.gov) and type in “risk adjustment,” then go into the file for risk adjustment. It will then bring you to the CMS page labeled “Risk Adjustment” and you will see the files for the different years available. Make sure when looking up the mapping for 2019 that you are in fact looking at the file labeled “2019 Model Software/ICD-10 Mapping.”

The CMS website is a wonderful resource for you to use, but it takes some time to learn how to navigate it. It is well worth the time and effort it will take to learn, though. You could also use Google to search for “FY19 ICD 10 V23 CMS-HCC Payment Count Model Crosswalk.” That should take you straight to the page your looking for, too.
