Sociologist begins academic study of CDI profession

After four years of studying the intricacies of the medical transcription industry, Gary C. David, PhD, associate professor of sociology and associate professor of information design and corporate communication at Bentley University in Waltham, MA, has turned his attention to CDI. David is in the very beginning stages of what he hopes will be a multiyear research project regarding the roles, responsibilities, and outcomes associated with the CDI profession. He hopes to gather at least 40 interviews and plans to launch a survey in the near future.

“Mostly, I want this research to be useful to the industry,” David says. “To further our understanding of the role and the effect it has on medical documentation and outcomes—to further our knowledge.”
