The American Medical Association (AMA) recently announced the updates included in the CPT 2025 code set. These updates include 270 new codes, 112 deletions, and 38 revisions, according to JustCoding. The AMA said the changes were issued in reaction to emerging “medical innovations, new technologies, and cutting-edge procedures.”

“The CPT code set is the foundation for the efficient and effective exchange of standardized information in a data-driven health system, facilitating the reporting, measuring, analyzing, researching, and benchmarking of medical services and procedures with the goal of delivering better patient care, improved outcomes and lower costs. The latest updates to the CPT code set reflect advancements in contemporary clinical practice and ensures the code set fulfills its vital role as the trusted universal language of medicine,” said AMA President Bruce A. Scott, M.D., in a press statement.

Of the new codes, 37% are assigned to proprietary laboratory analyses and 30% are category III CPT codes for emerging medical services.

Notable updates in the CPT 2025 code set include:

  • Building on an artificial intelligence (AI) taxonomy introduced last year, seven new category III codes for AI augmentative data analysis have been established
  • Editorial revisions to remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) services
  • Updates to the CPT general surgery section
