News: CMS to count more codes on UB forms

CDI Strategies - Volume 4, Issue 8

Effective January 1, 2011, CMS is expanding the number of ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes processed on institutional claims, according to an MLN Matters® article released March 5, 2010.

This expansion will allow facilities to use up to 24 additional ICD-9 secondary diagnosis codes where CMS only processed eight codes previously. It also allows for the processing of additional associated present on admission codes and additional ICD-9 secondary procedure codes, up from five codes to 24.

The additional ability to capture and report such data offers further impetus for CDI specialists to help coders capture any and all services the patient received during his or her inpatient stay.
