ACDIS update: Volunteers for new ACDIS regulatory committee sought

CDI Strategies - Volume 12, Issue 27

Note: Since this announcement was originally run, ACDIS has received many kind volunteers for this committee and is currently not seeking any more volunteers. If you're interested in serving on another committee, though, please email ACDIS Editor Linnea Archibald (larchibald@acdis.org) and she can help get you connected.

One of the most problematic issues in CDI since its inception has been locating, interpreting, and applying official guidelines and regulations as they relate to the profession. ACDIS has been at the forefront of adjudicating this process for both new and experienced members for years. But, we have discovered a need for greater focus.

We are announcing a new Regulatory Committee dedicated to the topic of regulatory questions and concerns. Its purpose is to address ambiguous and/or conflicting official coding instructions and to collaborate with governing agencies to resolve these conflicts.

We are still in the process of developing the committee charter and policies, and have begun recruiting members.

The proposed committee goals include:

  • Identify emerging regulations and updated clinical criteria of importance and potential impact to ACDIS members and the CDI profession
  • Provide information to the ACDIS membership and the CDI profession in the form of summary articles published on acdis.org, and/or updates presented on ACDIS Radio or membership quarterly conference calls
  • Provide commentary to regulatory bodies including CMS during rulemaking periods
  • Submit requests for guidance to AHA Coding Clinic and medical specialties on behalf of ACDIS membership
  • Suggest recommendations for members when official instructions are conflicting
  • Monitor and report on confusing ICD-10-PCS coding issues
  • Monitor and report on Recovery Audit and clinical validation issues which may impact payment and/or quality and provide this information as a reference tool on the ACDIS website
  • Meet via conference call on a monthly basis

If you’re interested in learning more or know someone who might be a great fit for this new committee, please contact ACDIS CDI Education Specialist Allen Frady (afrady@acdis.org).
