ACDIS update: White paper released demystifying and communicating case-mix index
After sustained effort and much review, ACDIS Advisory Board members have officially released a new white paper on a prevalent topic that is often misunderstood: Case mix index (CMI). “Demystifying and communication case mix index” sets out to cover the basics of CMI as well as communicate its complexities. First defining CMI, the paper then goes into further detail on how a CDI department can and cannot impact their organization’s CMI.
The white paper also covers vital information such as how hospitals currently use CMI, how CDI departments can use CMI, and the viability of CMI as a continuing metric. Last, it gives recommendations on how CDI professionals can communicate with their organizational leadership about CMI as a performance indicator. Throughout the paper, graphs and detailed examples are included to highlight the use of CMI, the factors influenced by CDI efforts, and the factors outside of a CDI department’s control.
What are ACDIS white papers? These documents are an ACDIS member resource that discuss best practice and new ideas for the CDI world in a less formal manner than position papers. One can be written by an ACDIS Advisory Board member, a subset of the board, or an external source subject to board approval.
