Director’s Note: First group of CCDS credential holders due for recertification

It seems to be hard to believe, but we’re approaching the two-year anniversary of the launch of the certified clinical documentation specialist (CCDS) certification. We have made some significant strides in that time and the CCDS is now gaining a solid foothold in the industry. Many employers are requesting credential verification, we’re starting to see the CCDS listed as a preferred certification in some CDI job openings, and it is now included as one of the national certifications that may be submitted on the Demographic Information Form (DIF) as part of the data requirements for Magnet Recognition Program® designation.
We also recently published an alphabetical list, sorted by state, of those who earned the CCDS credential between May 16, 2009, and April 1, 2011. You can view that list here: http://www.hcpro.com/content/265434.pdf.
As a reminder you must recertify every two years from the date on which you passed the exam. That means that the first group who sat for the very first CCDS exam at the second annual ACDIS conference (May 16, 2009) are due to recertify by Monday, May 16, 2011. We do extend a 45-day grace period to meet that deadline, but after that your credential expires and you must re-take the exam.
