News: 14 million Americans could be uninsured by 2034, analysis suggests

CDI Strategies - Volume 19, Issue 36

Ten million Americans are predicted to be uninsured by 2034 due to the recently enacted Congressional budget reconciliation package, according to a new estimate from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

The estimate predicts that loss in coverage will be due to “changes to Medicaid (7.5 million), the ACA Marketplaces (2.1 million), and other policies and interactions among different provisions (0.4 million).”

However, this is a conservative estimate: according to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), this number could even surpass 14 million.

“When combining the impact of the reconciliation law with that of the expected expiration of the ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits,” the KFF notes, “CBO estimates show that the number of uninsured people will increase by more than 14 million in 2034.”

Moreover, the reconciliation package is estimated to increase the uninsured rate by 3% in more than 20 states. The states predicted to be hit the hardest are Louisiana, Florida, and Arizona, where the uninsured rate is expected to increase by 5%.
