Note from the ACDIS Editor: Painting the whole picture of risk, quality in the new CDI Journal edition!
by Jess Fluegel
Given the important but sizeable goal of CDI work, it’s no surprise that what CDI professionals review is expanding, including factors that impact the portrayal of a patient’s risk of mortality and severity of illness. Risk adjustment may not be the forte of every CDI program yet—but according to this year’s CDI Week Industry Survey, 61.74% of respondents are currently reviewing for risk adjustment during chart reviews! If you break it down further, 11.82% of that is in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, 46.97% in the inpatient setting alone, and 2.95% in the outpatient setting alone.
For these reasons, we gave the November/December edition of the CDI Journal a focus on risk adjustment alongside its close cousin, quality reviews. ACDIS members can check out this last edition of the 2024 volume here!
In this edition, readers will find articles about:
- How to achieve a five-star quality rating
- Using APPs to enhance physician advisor teams
- How to follow the data on readmissions
- A review of risk adjustment
- How inpatient RA is a great next step for CDI
- One CDI team’s journey to a new EHR
- App-based learning to aid comprehension of organizational knowledge
- Risk adjustment in the outpatient setting
- Documentation challenges related to substance use and more
- A physician advisor’s perspective on renal failure
This edition also includes our regular Meet a Member feature to offer advice directly from a CDI professional in the ACDIS community.
The ACDIS team hopes you enjoy this latest edition and find something helpful in its pages. As always, the CDI Journal is a benefit of ACDIS membership. To learn more about joining ACDIS, click here. ACDIS members can earn one CCDS/CCDS-O CEU for reading each edition of the Journal and taking the associated quiz. You can learn more on the full edition download page.
To kick off the new year, our next edition’s topic will be on “Your Career in CDI,” and we’re hoping to cover a wide range of topics from starting one’s CDI career to CDI specialization, being in a leadership role, creating a departmental and/or personal career ladder, and more! Contributing to the CDI Journal is a great opportunity for CDI professionals to share insight with the community, plus you can receive 0.5 CEUs per 350 published words (articles tend to be around the 750-1,500-word mark).
If you have advice to share, we’d love to receive your submission. The deadline for the January/February edition is December 1, 2024! You can send your submissions to me at jess.fluegel@hcpro.com.
We hope this edition helps you in your CDI efforts! Please reach out to me if you have any questions or are interested in writing for our next Journal edition.
