Note from the Editorial Manager: Make sure your experiences are represented in the 2026 Industry Survey
by Karla Kozak
One of the greatest things about the CDI community is the diversity of professional backgrounds people come from. While a large portion of CDI professionals hail from a clinical background, such as nursing, many have entered the industry from coding, health information management, revenue cycle, and other backgrounds.
According to the 2025 CDI Week Industry Survey, some of the most popular credentials respondents reported holding included:
- Registered Nurse (RN; 73.68%)
- Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS; 69.61%)
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS; 16.28%)
- Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP; 11.26%)
- CCDS-Outpatient (CCDS-O; 6.24%)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA; 5.83%)
- Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA; 5.02%)
- Doctor of Medicine (MD; 4.07%)
This diversity in experience allows the profession to constantly evolve and move forward, never held back by the constraints of habits or tradition. This constant motion results in a community that is always excited to learn, grow, and connect.
With that said, data can only represent those who have responded to the survey. So, take a few minutes to make sure your unique background and experiences are represented in out 2026 CDI Week Industry Survey. The survey is open now through July 6 and will only take a few minutes to complete.
To best represent the diversity of the profession, we’re looking to hear from CDI professionals of all backgrounds, ranks, and levels of experience and education. Whether you hail from a large academic medical center, a rural healthcare facility, or somewhere in between, we want to hear from you.
