Note from the Associate Editorial Director: Pediatric resources for your CDI reviews

CDI Strategies - Volume 19, Issue 20

by Linnea Archibald

According to the 2024 CDI Week Industry Survey, 49.27% of respondents currently review pediatric records and another 5.02% plan to expand in the next year. That means that, even if you don’t work at a strictly pediatric hospital, it’s likely you encounter pediatric records in the scope of your CDI work.

Even though the review processes may be the same as they are for other patient populations, anyone reviewing pediatric records will tell you that the disease processes, clinical conditions, and coding considerations are very different for the pediatric population. As our pediatric CDI community often says, children aren’t just little adults.

As you may have seen, ACDIS has a brand-new pediatric CDI book: Pediatric CDI Foundations. This new resource was previously titled Pediatric CDI: Building Blocks for Success, and it has been newly revised to provide an in-depth look at a variety of documentation concerns specific to childhood conditions.

To celebrate the release of this excellent new resource, I wanted to spend some time today highlighting a few other pediatric-focused resources available through ACDIS.

First, there are a number of CDI Journal articles that ACDIS members may find helpful:

Secondly, if you missed its initial release, ACDIS also released a white paper in September 2024 in collaboration with the American College of Physician Advisors (ACPA) titled Developing Pediatric Respiratory Failure Guidelines, which is available to members on the website.

If you’re not currently an ACDIS member, we also have a few episodes of the ACDIS Podcast from the last couple of years that may be helpful on your pediatric journey:

Finally, in addition to our brand-new book, ACDIS also has an online learning course focused on pediatric CDI: Pediatric CDI Essential Skills. You can find more information about that course here.

Whether you’re just starting your pediatric CDI review journey, or you’ve been in the trenches for years, we hope that these resources will be beneficial to you! And of course, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the ACDIS team at info@acdis.org.
