Working Smarter, Not Harder: How AI Transformed CDI at Premier Health
Like most health systems, Premier Health in southwestern Ohio faced shrinking margins and a growing demand to do more with less. With just 15 people on their CDI team and over 30,000 data points per patient chart, expecting them to catch every missing or incorrect diagnosis was like asking them to find needles in a digital haystack—until they introduced clinical AI.
Premier Health successfully integrated clinical AI into their CDI workflows in the spring of 2024. In the year since, their CDI team has leveraged AI to improve their second-level reviews, focus their clinical judgment where it's needed most, uncover hidden revenue, and better represent care quality. Since going live, they’ve successfully uncovered net new revenue — proving that AI isn’t just a buzzword, it meaningfully affects the bottom line.
Join Jeanne Johnson, executive director of CDI and Coding at Premier Health, and Dr. Michael Gao, CEO and co-founder of SmarterDx, as they break down how Premier Health evaluated AI and transformed their second-level review process, and how your hospital can follow suit.
Upon completion of this program, attendees will learn:
- How hospitals can mimic Premier’s success with AI implementation to do more with less — despite low margins and staffing challenges.
- The definition of different types of AI and how they can drive net new revenue and boost quality of care scores or hospitals.
- Ways to engage decision makers to implement AI, and CDI staff and physician advisors to further their learning development with AI.
Speakers: Jeanne Johnson, MHA/INF, BSN, RN, CCDS, is the Director of Clinical Documentation and Coding at Premier Health. Michael Gao, MD, is the co-founder and CEO of SmarterDx.
